Beautiful Sunrise

I’ve been a traveller all my life so for my mum’s 60 th birthday I decided to take her to Sri Lanka for a backpacking trip!! She looked at me in horror when I said no hairdryer so she got ready with bandanas and head scarves!! I was living in Abu Dhabi at the time as a digital nomad so a short 4 hour flight to Colombo for a 5 day trip was possible. We arrived in Colombo very early and made our way to the train station to collect the online tickets I’d bought to head south to Galle.

Train to Galle

We found a local coffee shop and my mum commented how it tasted like dishwater so no starbucks in this part of town…but all part of the backpacker experience!! We got the train to Galle and I’d booked first class seats and it’s a beautiful journey following the west cost down to the south. The next adventure was the tuk tuk which is popular local transport but I wasn’t sure if my mum would feel scared or not!! Well it was the opposite as everyday she would say, ‘Can we go out in the tuk tuk today?’ LOL Honestly she was worse than a child!!!

Tuk tuk fun!!

I booked nice accommodation so it was more of an upmarket backpacker trip and we had great fun exploring the local area and of course chilling on the beach in Unawatuna. She tried the local food but a bit spicy for her tastes but there’s always possible to get international food. We had an amazing time and I wanted to do something memorable for her birthday.

Rocking the backpacker look!!

We visited the turtle hatchery near Koggala and saw the fisherman on stilts and of course lots of spa treatments and gem shopping. It was nice for her as when I returned to Sri Lanka she felt happier as we could share some memories and she knew I was used to the culture and country.

Sampling the local cuisine

So now I’m back in Sri Lanka and this time not for a vacation but a lifestyle choice as a digital nomad….this can be the challenge sometimes getting the work travel balance as we forget to travel…more about that in my next blog!!! The great thing is she’s planning a trip to visit me next year so can’t wait…amazing to make memories :)))

Bye for now,

Mei xx
